The realization dims some of my excitement, but not completely. I don’t have to fight the person behind all these attacks. I simply have to stay alive long enough for Lord Marius to identify which of his peers is the culprit and lay the smackdown on him.

While Reese excitedly scribbles away and his coven makes comments, Pen rises from the couch. I’m surprised she and her team stayed as long as they did, especially with how upset Pen has been with me. I thought she’d grab Flint and run back to their office, which if I’m honest, is far more secure than we are here.

She stops in front of me. “A word?”

Expecting another lashing for endangering one of her men again, I nod and follow her into the foyer. Marc and Flint glance after us, but stay seated while my demons of destruction remain near the entrance to the living room, giving us a pretense of privacy, even if they’ll be listening in, the eavesdroppers.

I stop next to the stairs, my body tense.

Pen crosses her arms under her breasts, her expression indecipherable. “I wanted to apologize for my actions.”

Her words catch me off guard, as does the regret in her smoky voice. “For what?”

The skin around her eyes and lips tighten as if it’s hard for her to speak. “I have been overly hard on you. There are not many I care for in this world, and when one is in danger, I’m not always…rational. But as I have been reminded, Sharpe puts his life at risk daily in his career. He is a warrior of this time, and I have no sway over his actions, nor does anyone else. You did not deserve my ire, and you are no longer blacklisted.”

“You’re right in that you can’t stop him from protecting Clearhelm, but…” I scuff my foot against the floor. I don’t like apologizing any more than she does, but we both made mistakes, and I’d like us to be on good terms. “I did use Sharpe’s presence to get you guys to show up without charging me, so I’m sorry about that.”

She scoffs softly. “I was aware of your manipulations. You’re not subtle.”

I let out a heavy sigh. “So I’ve been told.”

“It’s refreshing, though. And I know you won’t unduly use this weakness to your advantage.” She glances back toward the living room. “You embrace what most demons reject these days. It gives me hope for this future that’s being built.”

“How bad are things?” I ask quietly.

“There will be battles,” she says, not trying to sugarcoat things. “There are always battles before a change. But I don’t believe there will be another war. Lord Marius has had centuries to come up with contingency plans to prevent that from happening. Demons could not stay hidden forever. Human curiosity and scientific advances would not have allowed it. Even without your unplanned revelation, it would have come to pass within the next few decades.”

I’ve had similar thoughts. With everything recorded these days
